Roland Neil Woodward

1934-2026

Roland Neil Woodward Roland Neil Woodward
We knew this day was coming as Dad was 91 years old, but it is still difficult to believe that he had a serious fall and had to be admitted to Upper River Valley Hospital, which is where he passed the next day on June 5th, 2026.
Dad was born in Upper Queensbury, NB on December 12, 1934, and since 2019 he was blessed to live back in the farmhouse he was born in. He spent his childhood and then as an adult every weekend at this same farm he loved. He graduated in 1952 from Southampton Regional High School.
After graduation in the fall of 1952, he started working for NB Power and continued for almost 40 years. He started out shoveling dirt around post holes and then putting tar and tar paper around those same poles. Then he went to work on a line crew and after 7 years took over a crew as foreman. This crew travelled all around the province meaning he boarded at different places during the week and only home or to the farm on the weekends. It was at this time in his career about 1958 that he saw this tall dark haired young woman walking from the Centennial building in Fredericton as he was driving by with the Power commission truck. He asked his foreman Herb Daley if he knew who she was. His wife Lillian did and that started their story. They married October 29,1960 and Dad built their home on Sunset Drive in Fredericton. Teresa continued to work in Fredericton for the government until their first girl Andrea was born in 1962 and later JoAnn in 1965. Due to Dad working away from home, Mom resigned her position to be a stay-at-home mom.
Dad had great memories and stories of the different boarding places he stayed and the wonderful meals he ate and cards they played. In 1968 he moved to Woodstock with his family to work and not long after he was in charge of the NB Power office there. Then for 8 years he supervised crews around the province in distribution. Next, he worked in Field Operations in the Province of NB. Near the end of his NB Power career, he was District Manager and worked for two years out of head office with the VP.
After his retirement he worked installing hot water tanks until he was 60. His work did not stop he just changed it to volunteering for Woodstock Lions Club, Woodstock Old Home Week, Maritime Fiddlers Association and any organization that needed a fund raiser Dad was on it. It was done and a success every time. He, along with Mom, organized too many to count music events and fiddle doo’s in Woodstock, Nackawic, Harvey, McAdam and Fredericton Junction. He also sold tickets for raffles and fund raisers too many to count. All of this kept him busy but also lots of stories and friendships he treasured.
He did not play any musical instruments because he left that to Mom on the keyboard, but he had the sound equipment, microphones and organization skills. Many reading this know when he called on his phone or in later years his cell phone and he started with a cough that he was going to ask you to do a job or buy a ticket, and most people never could say no, including his girls who attended and participated in many events.
When Mom was alive, they enjoyed a camp at First Eel River Lake and made memories with friends and their families especially grandchildren was the highlight when they visited.
Dad attended any church or community event in Woodstock that Andrea or her kids Andrew and Kathryn were participating in. He also attended a few sports events that his grandson Josh was playing in.
In 2018 he accepted Jesus as his Saviour while meeting with pastor Harold from Wicklow Baptist Church. I know many prayed for him for years and we are thankful that we know without a doubt in this sad time that he is in Heaven, walking with no pain and suffering. In his last years he attended Temperance Vale Baptist Church when he was able.
Dad was generous to his family when it was needed and supported any cause from Red Cross, Cancer Support, Heart and Stroke, Alzheimer’s Society, Diabetes Canada and Canadian Baptist Ministries. Also, QEII and SJRH as that is where Mom got her treatments years ago and many more agencies, we don’t know about.
Dad loved caps, the color red, plaid shirts and old mackinaw jackets. He was an avid Montreal Canadians fan and hockey was on his TV most days, if not the news was. When he lived in Woodstock, he was known to stir up gossip at Tims Hortons and McDonalds. He also, up to age 79, drove cars for CYV travelling all over the Maritimes and Quebec - lots of times with his friend Fred. In his life he had race horses, Herford cows, an assortment of 2 wheel drive half ton trucks, tractors and farm equipment, all used and needing fixing. In his failing health he loved his laptop, especially Facebook, funeral home announcements and listening to music events live and we want to thank all of you that reached out to him over Facebook. Dad loved to play crib, and we want to extend appreciation to anyone who came to his home to play crib with him in the last years.
He leaves behind his girls Andrea Woodward Brewer (Richard) and JoAnn Ford (Trent). His precious grandchildren Andrew Scott (Siobhan), Joshua Kilburn, Kathryn Scott, and Carrie Kilburn Toynton (Jacob). Also, his sister-in-law Vera Woodward and brother-in-law Gary Cliff who became his family also. Dear to his heart were nephew Raymond Woodward (Beverley) and nieces Natalie Ramirez (Jonathan) and Susan Cliff, Lorie Ryder (Tom); step-grandchildren Denise Brewer (Eric), Krystal McCann (Trent), Travis Ford (Morgan). Special to him as well were Mom’s Briggs family nieces and nephews.
Dad had many neighbours and friends in Woodstock, Fredericton and Nackawic area and you know who you are and we are thankful for you. Those that helped at the farm over the years, the drop in visits to the house in Woodstock, and then the farmhouse in Upper Queensbury, the cards sent and the many calls to him on his phone.
Dad took every death hard and each one he lost made him sad. He was predeceased by his parents Frank and Hilda (Parent) Woodward, his wife of 46 years, our mom, Teresa (Briggs); a brother Raymond Woodward and sister Avis Cliff; sons-in-law James Snowden and Chris Kilburn; nephew Glendon Woodward and all of his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law in the Briggs family, Saint Elmo, Iris MacDonald (Dean), Marjorie Bustard (Curly), Lloyd Briggs (Donna), Ruth Webber (Ernie), Owen Briggs (Georgia), Betty Trecartin (Aubrey), Eileen Stairs (Albert), along with several Briggs nieces and nephews. He lost many friends over the years, one being his best friend Fred Dickinson in 2018.
We are grateful for Jason Price who lived with Dad as a friend and then caregiver both in Woodstock and then at the farm. Dad could not have stayed as long as he did in his home had you not been there.
Dad didn’t want to leave the farm, but his care needs deemed he had to do so. He spent a month respite at York Care in Fredericton and then his last months at Carleton Manor in Woodstock where he enjoyed all the volunteer music, devotions and BINGO. Thank You to all community members that take their own time to provide lifelines to residents. We thank the staff at Carleton Manor (Glen Arbor) - it is not easy work, caring for our elderly, and you make residents feel at home away from their own homes. Thanks also to Dr. Dale MacElwain who cared for Dad for 50 years. Dr. Jones and Dr. Pickens and staff at Nackawic Health Center who cared for Dad since 2019. To physicians and staff at Upper River Valley Hospital, thank you for your support and kindness this week.
Visiting hours will be held at Flewelling Funeral Home, 585 Otis Drive, Nackawic, NB on Saturday, June 13, 2026 from 1 to 3 pm, followed by the funeral service at 3 pm with Rev. Gordon Cook officiating. A reception will follow at the funeral home. Interment at Temperance Vale Cemetery.
To remember Dad if you choose, support Temperance Vale Baptist Church … designate fund to support his granddaughter Kathyn Scott, Global Field Staff in Dominican Republic with Canadian Baptist Ministries or support Temperance Vale Cemetery.
