David Wallace Stairs
1940-2012
David W. Stairs of Hawkshaw, NB passed away December 23, 2012 at
Carleton Manor in Woodstock, NB after a lengthy illness. David was
born at Pokiok, NB in 1940, a son of the late Wallace and Helena
(Pickard) Stairs. Growing up with Uncle David was fun. He would teach
us to play cards (45s was his favorite), darts during the cold winter
nights, goal tending when we could get him to play hockey in the yard,
and take us fishing in the spring and summer. He taught us to roll
handmade cigarettes. We will never forget his strong coffee with
carnation milk, a Maritime tradition for certain. That coffee went
extremely well with Grammie Stairs’ cookies and doughnuts. Uncle
David helped us fix our bicycles and build tree forts, over and over
and over again. He would play 500 UP, hitting the ball so we would
have to run all over the field. When we asked him one of the many
million questions we often pestered him with, he said......”to
make little girls ask questions”. Uncle David would tease his
many nieces and nephews but was always there to pick us up and clean
off the dirt and tears.
He is survived by a sister, Elinor Graham of Hampton, NB; two
brothers, Albert Stairs, Hawkshaw, NB and William Stairs (Betty),
Fredericton, NB and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, David was predeceased by a sister-in-law,
Eileen Stairs and a brother-in-law, Arthur Graham.
In keeping with David’s request, there will be no visiting hours
or funeral service. Interment will take place later at Barony
Cemetery.
